On 24 July 2015, Ashprihanal Aalto set a new record for the world’s longest race, the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile race. The flying Finn completed the epic journey in under 41 days, almost a day faster than the previous record set in 2006. In doing so, he averaged over 76 miles (123.5 km) a day.

Utpal Marshall, who has covered the race since the start, produced this short video which includes footage from Asprihanal’s last day and finish, interviews with Ashprihanal and other runners who talk about the inspiration they received from him.

The race is the longest of many ultra distance races founded by Sri Chinmoy, who felt that these kind of seemingly-impossible endurance races were a very tangible way of demonstrating the unlimited capacity of the human soul. Ashprihanal has now completed the race 13 times, winning eight of them.
