Sri Chinmoy Weightlifting

Last modified April 15, 2011

Sri Chinmoy began weightlifting in June 1985 at the age of 54. In the past 20 years Sri Chinmoy has been able to make unprecedented progress in the field of weightlifting. His achievements have both astonished and inspired those in the weightlifting community.

Sri Chinmoy says he does not lift to break records or proclaim his strength but to inspire others. As Sri Chinmoy says

I am a man of prayer and meditation. I feel inspiration is of paramount importance. If I can inspire someone, and if that person also can inspire me, then we can do many good things for the betterment of this world.

Sri Chinmoy has long maintained an active interest in sports, as a youth in India he was both an excellent sprinter and decathlon champion. On coming to the west in 1964 Sri Chinmoy participated in many marathons and finished 5 ultra marathons. Sri Chinmoy feels that sports and spirituality complement each other very well.

“  I feel that the physical and the spiritual must go together; they cannot be separated. When we pray and meditate, we get an extra supply of energy, which you can call strength. This strength can be utilised for a good purpose.

To this end he encourages his students in the Sri Chinmoy Centre to participate in running events. The Sri Chinmoy Marathon team is also one of the world’s leading organisers of ultra running events.

Recently Sri Chinmoy has dedicated his lifts to those of his same age group. For example Sri Chinmoy’s recent 256 lb wrist curl. Sri Chinmoy says he wishes to inspire those of his generation and show that even in advancing years we are still capable of doing many things.
